We also see no reason to do anything offshore or to ignore the DMCA.
@Bios: The links to the sites in your post have been removed, because we at least have strong doubts that all of their download offerings are legally okay.KeymasterIn general we very much do like the idea of giving back to the developers. We believe that this is already happening. A lot of users let us know that they use the free downloads at GPLDL to try something out. Most of them get a license frm the original developer once they enter a productive state that generates some revenues and allows them to pay for a license.
We also encourage anyone to get a license as soon as possible to support the developer and benefit from the support that the developers provide.
It is important to note that GPLDL has not been set up to harm the developers or encourage free riders but to allow people to get something started which they would or could not do if they had to pay for expensive support licenses right away.
KeymasterThanks for your input guys and that great discussion how to make GPLDL better. A lot of the things that you mentioned here are right and do apply but let me answer some of the points in detail.
Security is always first: Saying that, we will not accept anything that is not 100% bullet proof from anyone who we cannot 100% trust. We will not use any nulled stuff from some dark corners on the web just to extend the catalog. We like what we have right now, everything is as secure as it can get and we are not in a rush to change things. We are on the other hand very much interested in ways how we can open up to let users participate actively and share their 100% GPL Themes and Plugins. Unfortunately we could not find a way to allow this without taking on a security risk, which is – as said out of question. Brian’s idea to allow trusted moderators may be something worth considering under very strict selection criteria.
One more thing: Curating the latest updates is indeed a time consuming process especially since we have to manage a lot of accounts with various developers (lots of sources to manage). Fortunately our time does not need to be paid for, since the whole site is strictly built for philanthropic reasons and we enjoy providing WordPress items especially to those who are curious to try something new and those who cannot afford to pay for a license anyway. All the donations we receive go directly into maintaining the site and growing the catalog.
KeymasterObfuscated code is a problem, because you never know what you get. As long as it is licensed under the GPL, it is fine to deobfuscate the code and/or post instructions how to do so. It is different though, if you deobfuscate it, alter the original file and then release it under the same name, because it is not the same thing. If you release it under a different name, that is fine as well.
We only consider providing GPL plugins that we receive as 100% originals from the developers to ensure that there is no malware or other things included that threaten our users security.

KeymasterEllanor, thanks for your kind words about GPLDL. We try to minimize the times beetween the release of an updated Plugin or Theme by the Developers and the time it appears on GPLDL. The update process is pretty much manual though and thus causing some delays every now and then. Usually we have the updates online within a couple of days though and it should only be in exceptional cases that it takes longer. Since we usually only send out newsletters once a week this might be why it seems longer. You can check the GPLDL repositories anytime though. We are also planning on developing other ways of notification about updates.

KeymasterEdgar, you cannot do auto updates. You have to download the latest version from GPLDL again, delete the outdated one on your server and upload the new version. Autoupdates require license keys which require a purchase from the original developer. Please have a look at our FAQ for more information about our service and the limitations.
KeymasterT, thanks for your feedback which is very much appreciated. We are still beta testing GPLDL and try out various user levels which we change from time to time. If you need a constant number of downloads each, please get in touch with us and we can arrange that.

Unfortunately you cannot share them with us, because we need to ensure that they are completely untouched (nothing added or removed) and coming directly from the developers we need to download them ourselves and cannot redistribute them if they passed through someone else’s hands before.
