Regarding Themeforest Themes: There are very few items that are explicitly 100% GPL licensed – an this is what we have been focusing on with GPLDL. Envato claims that most WordPress themes on the market place should have a “regular license” that you can find here:

Darren, yes that surely would be possible, but what exactly makes the difference between a gaming and a dating theme? Most of the themes can be customized to whatever you want it to be and are quite generic…

Tim, we have thought carefully about this and we decided not to allow any sharing of links to WordPress items outside of GPLDL. The reasons are manyfold and outweigh the potential benefits.

First there is a legal issue: A lot of WordPress items are not 100% GPL but use different licenses. To determine if an appropriate license is used that allows sharing is not super easy. You can see by some requests that our users make in the wish lists that not everyone understands what a 100% GPL license means and therefore may be (unconsciously) create a copyright violation by sharing the wrong files. We are not going to support this by allowing to set links and we are not going to check all links that are published here, therefore we are not allowing links outside of GPLDL.

Second there is a security issue: The WordPress items shared by users may or may not be modified from what the developers have published. Any third party may add malware or change the code. People may be tempted to share files that they downloaded from some unreliable sources on the internet and spread these files to the GPLDL community putting everyone’s security at risk. We are not going to support this by allowing to set links to resources outside of GPLDL.

Third there is an update issue: If someone decides to share a certain version of a WordPress item and you use it for your site, this individual may or may not provide updates in the future. If you are stuck at a certain version outdated version that has security flaws that shared item will not help you very much. We are not going to support this by allowing to set links to resources outside of GPLDL.

Since we do not want to cause any of these issues for our users we decided that the only reliable way to provide quality WordPress items is to do it by ourselves right through GPLDL.

So if you want to help maintain the offerings GPLDL already has and support us in extending the catalog with quality items please make a donation so we can buy licenses directly from the developers and release the WordPress items here.

PLEASE UNDERSTAND THAT ANY LINKS TO WORDPRESS ITEMS OUTSIDE GPLDL WILL BE DELETED BY THE ADMINS AND USER ACCOUNTS WILL BE BANNED!

Don’t agree with you that Updraft plus is better than BackupBuddy… BackupBuddy works in almost any Hosting environment which makes it good for smaller and medium sites. Larger sites should not use Backup Plugins in WordPress anyway and use Server based backup solutions instead… Highly unlikely we will see Updraft Plus here anytime soon…

I am watching your demand but we need to buy a license to provide it here. Anyone willing to donate the license fee to GPLDL? ;-)

Vargas, we need to buy an account from the devs (which we do either on multiple requests from our users) or if someone donates his/her account to us.

Is there anyone who can contribute a WPMUDEV-Subscription?

We have received a number of wishes on this particular extension for WooCommerce and have added it to the repository today.

You just need a license key for automatic updates. Just ignore it and do manual updates by downloading the latest updates from GPLDL or get a paid license from the developers for more convenience (and support in case you need it).

Anyone besides Dean interested in this?
