First and foremost, I am a supporter of the GPL movement and a premium member. Today I contacted by a theme provider with a threat of lawsuit over the use of themes obtained here. Upon inspection of the license files, the language seems to split the CSS (non GPL) apart from the PHP code (GPL). I need help determining if the license was recently changed by the developer (ZZP), or if the themes should never have been provided here.

To anyone seeking an alternative, I highly recommend the genesis framework and its child themes from StudioPress or ElegantThemes. They both fully embrace GPL and build really great products.

Contact them, and threaten to counter sue for misrepresentation about complying with GPL in the first place.

How did they find out in the first place? And which theme are we talking about exactly?

Themes by ZZP in the special gifts section. I’m not naming any particulars to keep it from indexing. The admins here will probably have the same issue.

What is ZZP? There is no legal issue here at GPLDL. All items are 100% GPL and nothing to worry… Please be more specific so we can help you. Otherwise this threat does not make any sense…

From their website: “We work hard to develop and support these themes, therefore the only limitation is that you are not free to resell or redistribute…”

This is from the license file included in every theme.

This theme or plugin is comprised of two parts.

(1) the PHP code and integrated HTML are licensed under the General Public
License (GPL). You will find a copy of the GPL in the same directory as this
text file.

(2) All other parts, but not limited to the CSS code, images, and design are
licensed according to the license purchased from Envato.

They transferred to a split license system and obviously copied Envato a little too closely. In the developer’s words, these themes are not GPL. This seems shady which is the reason I posted.
